Edmonton Retired Teachers’ Association ByLaws

This organization, known as the Edmonton Retired Teachers’ Association (ERTA), is a branch of the Alberta Retired Teachers’ Association (ARTA).
|

- To encourage retired teachers to take an active interest in the affairs of the Edmonton Retired Teachers Association and the Alberta Retired Teachers’ Association.
- To help our members to keep informed about proposed changes that will likely affect them
- To maintain liaison with other groups interested in retired persons and their needs
- To give an organizational voice about our concerns to other organizations and to government bodies
- To provide opportunities for fellowship and group activities for our members

- The Edmonton Retired Teachers’ Association accepts as a member, with voting power, any retired teacher who is receiving a pension from the Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund
- The Edmonton Retired Teachers’ Association accepts as an associate member without voting privileges:
- the spouse of any retired teacher
- the widow or widower of any retired teacher
- a retired teacher from another province, or from another educational institution, o
- any retired teacher who has been unable to qualify for an Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund pension.
- Membership is contingent upon the payment of the annual fee
- Honorary Life Membership may be conferred by the executive.
- The executive shall delegate to a Selection Committee consisting of the president, past-president, and a secretary the responsibility for recommending Honorary Life Memberships for final approval by the executive.
- Any member of the Edmonton Retired Teachers’ Association may submit to the president, in writing, a nomination for Honorary Life Membership provided such nomination is submitted by May 15. In addition, the Selection Committee may choose candidates for consideration on its own initiative
- To qualify for consideration for the award of Honorary Life Membership, a candidate must be a current member of the Edmonton Retired Teachers’ Association, must be seventy (70) years of age or over, and must have been a member of the Association for at least five years. In addition, a candidate must be shown to have made a significant contribution to the Association
- The Selection Committee may recommend to the Executive that none or not more than two (2) Honorary Life Memberships be awarded in that year. Such awards, if any, shall be made at the September General Meeting.
