Edmonton Retired Teachers’ Association ByLaws

Article I Name

This organization, known as the Edmonton Retired Teachers’ Association (ERTA), is a branch of the Alberta Retired Teachers’ Association (ARTA).

Article II Objects

  1. To encourage retired teachers to take an active interest in the affairs of the Edmonton Retired Teachers Association and the Alberta Retired Teachers’ Association.
  2. To help our members to keep informed about proposed changes that will likely affect them
  3. To maintain liaison with other groups interested in retired persons and their needs
  4. To give an organizational voice about our concerns to other organizations and to government bodies
  5. To provide opportunities for fellowship and group activities for our members

Article III Membership

  • The Edmonton Retired Teachers’ Association accepts as a member, with voting power, any retired teacher who is receiving a pension from the Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund
  • The Edmonton Retired Teachers’ Association accepts as an associate member without voting privileges:
    • the spouse of any retired teacher
    • the widow or widower of any retired teacher
    • a retired teacher from another province, or from another educational institution, o
    • any retired teacher who has been unable to qualify for an Alberta Teachers’ Retirement Fund pension.
  • Membership is contingent upon the payment of the annual fee
  • Honorary Life Membership may be conferred by the executive.
    • The executive shall delegate to a Selection Committee consisting of the president, past-president, and a secretary the responsibility for recommending Honorary Life Memberships for final approval by the executive.
    • Any member of the Edmonton Retired Teachers’ Association may submit to the president, in writing, a nomination for Honorary Life Membership provided such nomination is submitted by May 15. In addition, the Selection Committee may choose candidates for consideration on its own initiative
    • To qualify for consideration for the award of Honorary Life Membership, a candidate must be a current member of the Edmonton Retired Teachers’ Association, must be seventy (70) years of age or over, and must have been a member of the Association for at least five years. In addition, a candidate must be shown to have made a significant contribution to the Association
    • The Selection Committee may recommend to the Executive that none or not more than two (2) Honorary Life Memberships be awarded in that year. Such awards, if any, shall be made at the September General Meeting.

Article IV Executive Officers

Section I Officers

The past-president executive officers of the Association shall be

  • a past-presiden
  • a first vice-presidentt
  • a second vice-president
  • three secretaries
  • a treasurer
  • an assistant treasurer
  • members-at-large as determined by the executive

Section II Terms of Office

That the terms of office for the officers of ERTA read as as follows:

  • The term of office shall be from one AGM to the next AGM.
  • Normally no elected Officer shall hold the same office for more than three (3) consecutive terms.
  • Officers shall take office immediately after the adjournment of the AGM at which they are elected, or if appointed, immediately upon appointment.
  • An Officer may resign from office at any time by giving written notice to the President.

Section III Elections

  1. The executive shall be elected at the annual meeting in June
  2. A Nominating Committee, chaired by the past-president shall be named by the past-president in consultation with the executive, to prepare a slate of officers.
  3. Additional nomination may be made from the floor.

Section IV Liason with Arta

 It shall be the responsibility of the executive to name a slate of delegates to attend the meetings of the Alberta Retired Teachers’ Association.

Article V Committees

Committees or other executive officers shall be named by the executive when found to be necessary.

Article VI Meetings

The executive shall be responsible for calling an annual general meeting in June and other regular or special meetings.

Article VII Financial Year

The financial year shall be May 1 to April 30.

Article VIII Fees

Membership fees shall be determined from time-to-time by the general membership on recommendation by the executive.

Article IX Amendments

These by-laws may be amended at any regular or special meeting of the Association by an affirmative vote of two-thirds of the members present and voting, provided that notice of motion has been given at the previous meeting.
