The Early Beginnings
The Edmonton Retired Teachers’ Association was started as a result of a group of teachers who informally organized and held meetings in the late fifties to discuss their concerns over low pensions, medical insurance, and hospital care.
By November 14th, the Retired Teachers’ of Edmonton was finalized under the leadership of President Larue Smith, Vice President J. Gordon Sinclair. and Secretary Lillian G. Parnell. The name was changed to Edmonton Retired Teachers’ Association in 1963 after the creation of the Alberta Retired Teachers’ Association.

What It Is Like Today
ERTA (Edmonton Retired Teachers’ Association) provides an opportunity for retired teachers to meet and enjoy the exchange of memories and experiences with friends and fellow members.
Teachers in the area who have contributed to the Alberta Teachers Retirement Fund are eligible to belong so teachers from both Public and Catholic boards, St. Albert, etc) are often in attendance at functions. You are encouraged to invite fellow members who have retired to join us as your guest. There are four major functions held each year with an agenda and entertainment. Sometimes this includes a speaker that discusses a subject related to travelling, security issues, updates on pension issues, etc.
